For example, let’s say you own a bakery and had registered your website to search engines when you first began, but now business is expanding. Instead of focusing solely on pastries, you now want to include cakes, as well. You are now trying to find customers to purchase your cakes, and to do this you add a new page to your website to reflect the new service. However, it can take awhile before search engines crawl your website again to see this change in your business and website content. Essentially, without completing manual search engine registration to reflect the new business offerings, your business may not pop up in the search results if someone searches “wedding cakes near me”, because the search engines just don’t know yet that your business now offers these services.

What is Web Crawling?

Web crawling (or just “crawling”) is the internet’s version of seeing how pages are connected, whether within the same website or within different websites.

For example, let’s go back to the bakery business scenario from earlier. Your bakery may be listed on your town’s website for local places to eat. If a search engine is crawling this page and sees it connected to your website, they now see the two as connected and will “read” both websites.

Additionally, a search engine may be crawling your website and see that your homepage links to a bunch of different pages within the same site, whether it’s your page for pastries, for cakes, for contact information, etc. Search engines will then “crawl” each of these pages, any internal website links in them, and any external links going to outside sites to see how they relate to each other.

Is Search Engine Registration the Same as Submitting a Sitemap?

No. A sitemap essentially tells search engines how your website’s pages are interconnected (and helps with crawling) but submitting a sitemap does not mean that your website is registered in search engines.
